When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead- 2012 Newberry Award Winner
Summary:
When You Reach Me is a book about a twelve year old girl named Miranda. She lives in an apartment building in a large city. It’s just her and her mom, except for Richard-her mom’s boyfriend, who comes over to help her mom practice for the game show, The $2,000 Pyramid. Miranda’s best friend was Sal, until one day something terrible happened. Miranda began working at a sandwich shop on her lunch break with two other friends. All they got paid was a sandwich with no meat ever day and a soda. The key in the hallway disappeared, and then strange letters started popping up with Miranda’s name on them. There’s the crazy man that stands in the road, the boys who stand near the building and make cat calls at her, and then there’s Calvin. Miranda is trying to save her friend’s life by replying to the letters with as much detail as possible. She’s not even sure which friend it is she is trying to save. In fear and in secret, Miranda does what the letters tell her to do and an old friend ends up back in her life.
